Immigration: Work Permit Processing Times Increased

Government immigration services have been reduced resulting in some significantly increased waiting times for visas and work permits.

To accommodate the lengthy processing times, please plan ahead and provide realistic start dates to ensure foreign nationals have sufficient time to secure the necessary immigration documentation.
Applying from outside of Canada

Current processing times are from 2 to 4 months, depending on the visa post. A foreign national must check the processing time for the consulate where the application was submitted. If there has been no response by the processing time indicated, the foreign national should contact the consulate where he/she submitted the forms. The need for a medical and Temporary Resident Visa will delay the processing time.

Unfortunately Academic Services is unable to expedite the processing times which result, in part, from reductions in Immigration services across Canada and overseas.

Applying from within Canada (for extensions)

• The current processing time stated by Immigration as of August 7, 2012 is 50 business days

• A foreign national who enters Canada and states he/she is here as a visitor is not allowed to do
research, observe, or participate in any on-campus activity or work on campus in any capacity,
whether paid or unpaid.

• A visitor cannot change his/her status to that of a worker from within Canada. The visitor must
exit the country and try to re-enter with the correct documentation to change from a visitor to
a worker.
