Payroll Updates

Payroll Operations has several updates to share including information about minimum wage increases, Retro pay, the new Semi-Monthly Timesheet, Canada Savings Bonds, and Graduate Student Scholarship Payments.

Increase to Minimum Wage
Alberta’s minimum wage increased from $9.40 to $9.75 per hour effective September 1, 2012.

Retro Pay for Support Staff
Retro pay was applied to the September 10th paycheque for all eligible Support Staff. If you have questions regarding the retro payment please contact your Employment & Pay Advisor.

New Semi-Monthly Timesheet Added to Forms Cabinet
A new Semi-Monthly Time Sheet has been added to the HRS Forms Cabinet. This new time sheet includes a drop down list which includes all semi-monthly pay periods. When a pay period is chosen the deadline and pay date information are automatically filled in, and the dates on the time sheet change to reflect that pay period. A drop down lists of all of the Time Reporting Codes and their descriptions has also been added to assist in filling in the code fields.

Please note: When you download the Semi-Monthly Timesheet, please select the "enable editing" button to begin using the form.

Canada Savings Bonds: Open Soon

The Canada Savings Bonds Payroll Savings Program E-Campaign will be available from October 1st to November 1st, 2012. More information will be sent to all staff via email at the beginning of the campaign. Please view the Canada Savings Bonds webpage for more information.

Graduate Student Scholarship Payments
Graduate students are now paid on the semi-monthly pay cycle which has resulted in changes to when scholarship payments occur. Graduate students with ongoing monthly scholarship payments will continue to be paid the full monthly payment amount, however, payments will occur over one or two pay periods depending on how many pay cheques the student will receive in that month.

For example, if a graduate student starts on September 1, 2012 and they are to receive a $2000 per month scholarship ending on August 31, 2013, in September 2012, the student will only receive one pay cheque. The pay cheque will be deposited on September 25th, after working the first pay period which is September 1st to the 15th. Because there is only one pay cheque in the month of September, the entire $2,000 monthly scholarship payment is paid on September 25, 2012 along with their pay. Beginning the next pay period, the student will receive two pay cheques, so they will receive $1,000 in the first pay period, and $1000 in the second pay period until the last pay cheque in August 2013.
Graduate students with academic-related employment (e.g., Graduate Assistantship appointments) will be paid their stipend which includes salary plus award payments for all of the time worked in the pay period ten days after the pay period is over. For the first pay period of the month, September 1-15, the payment is made on September 25th, 2012. For the second pay period of the month, September 16-30, the payment is made on October 10th, 2012. Monthly scholarship payments in addition to the stipend will be paid as described above.
