Immigration News

Academic Services (Immigration) would like to share an announcement about the new Labour Market Opinion Application, a reminder about foreign student work requirements, and information about the upcoming Immigration Information Sessions.

New Labour Market Opinion Application

Service Canada has published a new version of the Application for a Labour Market Opinion. Effective immediately, Service Canada will no longer accept the old version of the application. Please visit the Labour Market Opinion (LMO) webpage on the Human Resource services website for access to the new form and information about how to complete it.

Foreign Student Work Requirements
A foreign student must be actively engaged in full-time studies before they are legally entitled to work on campus. For example, if a student’s first term at the University of Alberta begins September 2013 they must not be invited to work on campus prior to the first day of classes.

A registered foreign student can apply for a Post - Graduate Work Permit when they have confirmation that they have fulfilled the requirements of their degree. Unless a foreign student holds a valid off-campus work permit, they cannot legally work (paid or unpaid) on campus until they have received their Post-Graduate Work Permit.

Immigration Information Sessions
Due to popular demand, Academic Services (Immigration) is hosting two Immigration Information Sessions.

Our Immigration Specialists will answer your questions about each process and provide you with tips on how to avoid pitfalls in the following areas:
· Inviting foreign visitors
· Recruiting foreign nationals (Labour Market Opinion)
· Responsibilities of the foreign national
· Spousal Employment
· Permanent Residence

We encourage HR Managers, payroll and administrative staff to register for either the January 8th or January 15th, 2013 session at 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Email academic.services@ualberta.ca to register.

Please contact Academic Services if you have any questions.
