Permanent Residents Entering or Re-entering Canada

As of March 15, 2016, Canadian permanent residents may not be permitted to enter Canada without carrying either a valid permanent resident card or a valid permanent resident travel document.

Processing time for permanent resident cards is currently 68 calendar days for new permanent residents and 149 calendar days for permanent resident card renewals. Permanent resident travel documents are processed in a few days to a few weeks. It is strongly recommended that staff members with Canadian permanent residence immediately take any necessary steps to ensure that they will be permitted to enter (or re-enter) Canada after March 14, 2016.
