Academic Staff Hires and Rehires

As you are aware, academic compensation negotiations for the 2015/2016 & 2016/2017 years are still pending and the across-the-board increase and increment rates for academic appointments will remain unknown until negotiations are complete. The following process outlines our recommendations for hire and rehire appointments for the July 1, 2016 - June 30, 2017 Academic Year.

HR Process Changes for Special Sessions Hires

Further to the communication sent out last week by Special Sessions (Registrar's Office), the funding reimbursement and the hiring processes for Special Sessions courses are now separate. The current Special Sessions Pay Action Form (PAF) will no longer be used and Departments must hire employees for Special Sessions courses in the same way they would hire employees for non-Special Sessions courses.

Cancellation of PLP for Support Staff: What You Need to Know

As we have shared previously, the 2016-17 Personal Leave Plan for Support Staff has been cancelled. Any applications from support staff that have already been received by HRS will not be processed for July 1, 2016.

Represent the U of A at the 2016 Corporate Challenge

Each year, the University participates alongside fellow post-secondary institutions in the Edmonton Corporate Challenge - a two-week sport and recreation event open to Edmonton and area companies, that focuses on participation, sportsmanship, team building and fun. The games are a great way to foster employee engagement, interaction, teamwork, morale and health and wellness through physical activity and company spirit events. The University's Corporate Challenge committee is currently looking for interested individuals from the campus community to represent the U of A through volunteering, participating in spirit activities and sporting events, spreading the word, and supporting their colleagues. Excellence in Leadership and Excellence in Learning Support Awards

The University of Alberta is fortunate to have dedicated Faculty and Staff who regularly make valuable contributions to our vibrant and supportive learning environment. We have the opportunity to nominate these outstanding individuals for the Excellence in Leadership Award, or the Excellence in Learning Support Award which are currently open for submissions. Nominations for the awards close May 31st and April 30th respectively. It is a great opportunity to nominate outstanding colleagues and team members. Voluntary Personal Leave Plan Cancelled for Support Staff

Since 2011, the University has publicly offered the voluntary Personal Leave Plan (PLP) annually to support staff and academic staff. Eligible employees who participate in this voluntary program apply for five days of leave without pay and have the cost of the leave deducted in equal installments over the twelve month plan period beginning in July 1 and ending June 30. All leave days are tracked by the employee's department or unit and must be taken within the plan period.

During this round of negotiations, the NASA bargaining team raised concerns with the University's administration of the PLP program. This was a surprise to the University given NASA has not formally raised any concerns with this voluntary program over the past 5 years. Given the late date these concerns were raised, regrettably, the parties were unable to resolve the issue and, as a result, the PLP program for 2016/17 is cancelled. As the University is currently in negotiations with NASA, we are unfortunately limited in our ability to provide a more comprehensive response to support staff on the reasons resolution was not reached.

HRS Still Accepting Special Sessions Pay Action Forms

You may have received a communication from Special Sessions (Registrar's Office) about process changes for reimbursement funding for Spring 2016 onward. HRS will be sharing our own changes to the hiring process for Special Sessions, which will make a full transition for Fall 2016. As we transition to this process, HRS will continue to accept and process Special Sessions Pay Action forms for the Spring and Summer 2016 terms.
