Immigration Updates

Immigration Services would like to remind you to complete a Foreign Visitor Category Assessment when inviting a foreign visitor to campus and that foreign nationals from countries who have not needed formal authorization may now require an electronic travel authorization.

With very few exceptions, when preparing to invite a foreign visitor to campus, it is necessary for the U of A host to complete a Foreign Visitor Category Assessment (FVCA) and submit it to Immigration Services. Please note that only the host or a designated representative of the host department is permitted to complete the FVCA. It is not appropriate for the intended visitor to complete the FVCA.

As previously shared, most foreign nationals from countries who have not needed formal authorization (called a visa or temporary resident visa) to fly to Canada will now need an electronic travel authorization. Although Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has allowed leniency regarding this requirement, as of September 29, 2016, the requirement will become mandatory. Learn more about the change on the Government of Canada's Electronic Travel Authorization webpage.
